XIAMEN, China — A collaborative research project titled "Application of Short Peptides in Digital Weight Management" was recently launched at the Xiamen Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDCP). The initiative is jointly organized by the Xiamen CDCP, the Xiamen Dietitian Association, and Tekwon Genetic Technologies Ltd. Approved under Xiamen’s 2024 Medical Engineering Integration Program, the project aims to develop innovative nutrition-based solutions for weight management.

Obesity is a known major risk factor for diabetes, hypertension, and cardiovascular diseases, often rooted in excessive caloric intake and disordered fat metabolism. Abnormal adipose tissue frequently exhibits inflammatory cell accumulation and elevated cytokine levels, leading to chronic metabolic inflammation.

Previous research by Tekwon Genetic Technologies revealed that marine fish peptides extracted by the company not only offer nutritional benefits but also demonstrate immunoregulatory properties. These peptides help improve overall immune function and effectively reduce levels of various inflammatory markers during nutritional intervention.

Building on a European clinical trial model, this new study incorporates moderated calorie control, high-protein intake, and physical exercise to offer a comprehensive digital weight-management strategy for overweight and obese individuals. According to the project lead, a high-protein diet—where protein accounts for over 20% of total energy intake—enhances satiety, increases energy expenditure, reduces fat accumulation, and improves metabolic health. The trial will use scientific dietary guidance, professional body composition analysis, and regular monitoring of biochemical nutritional indicators to fully evaluate the effects of nutritional intervention on weight and body composition.

With overweight and obesity becoming critical global public health issues, China faces special urgency: the 2020 Report on Nutrition and Chronic Disease Status of Chinese Residents indicates that 16.4% of adults are obese and 34.3% are overweight. In response, 16 national departments including the National Health Commission launched the "Weight Management Year" initiative in 2024, emphasizing the need for research collaboration and key technological advances in weight management.Nutrition plays a foundational role in health and disease prevention. Enhancing public awareness and scientific approaches to nutrition is vital to improving national health.

The study is now recruiting 150 volunteers aged 18–60 with a BMI between 25 and 32 kg/m². Participants will receive professional weight management guidance over a 90-day period. Applications are open from today—interested eligible individuals are encouraged to inquire and join. (Please contact: Ms.Li Yanyan, Ms. Zhao Qian)
